The SOJC provides gear and software so that students don’t have to purchase their own. Gear is available for checkout to all current SOJC students.

SOJC offers a variety of digital tools for short term checkout to all SOJC students, staff and faculty for use in producing their projects.

Equipment Checkout Policies

Patrons accept financial and legal responsibility when borrowing and using equipment from the School of Journalism & Communication. The individual on record as reserving the equipment is responsible for the timely return of any and all equipment and parts of equipment. Any damaged or missing equipment can result in the withholding of the grade for the course(s) in which the student is registered. There will also be a charge to that student’s account for the cost of repair or replacement of the damaged or missing item(s).

 

IML Gear

The Immersive Media Lab is the ideal room for using the SOJC’s virtual reality and augmented reality equipment.

In the IML there are three VR capable PC’s on mobile carts. These can be use in conjunction with the Oculus Rift S or HTC Vive headset for VR experiences or for programming and development. These can also be connected to one of the wall-mounted displays for group viewing and collaboration.

There are also 360-degree camera available at the J Cage so you can take video and picture to turn into a VR experience.

Computer/Mobile Accessories

Classroom A/V

Each computer classroom has a ceiling mounted projector, a retractable screen, and an instructor station with HDMI inputs for both a laptop and (installed) instructor iMac, DVD player and Crestron touchscreen to control video sources and audio.

Additional technology, such as a document camera or speakerphone can be reserved at the Tech Desk in 124 Lawrence Hall.

Music Library

Epidemic Sounds Music Library

Overview:

In the Fall of 2017, the Academic Technology Committee within the School of Journalism and Communication negotiated and purchased licensing to Epidemic Sound’s production music library.

Students and faculty within the School of Journalism and Communication may access and download music files for academic use only.

To create an account and use the service, please see below or download the ‘Epidemic Sound Guide’ PDF file on the right.

Creating an Account:

  1. Visit http://epidemicsound.com/students/
  2. Review the Attribution Policy.
  3. Choose University of Oregon from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click ‘Go to signup
  5. Complete the sign-up page, entering your name, the University, and choosing School as the business type.
  6. Enter your ‘@uoregon’ email address and a password (this should not be your DuckID/uoregon.edu email password), check the User Agreement and click ‘Sign Up‘.
  7. You may ignore the Partnership Sign-up.

How to Log In:

  1. Once you have created your student account, go to www.epidemicsound.com and click the ‘Log In‘ button at the top right.
  2. You will need to do this twice.
  3. At the Log In screen, enter your uoregon.edu email address and the password you set above.
  4. Click ‘Log In‘.

Browsing the Library:

  1. To begin searching for and downloading tracks, click ‘Browse‘ at the top left.
  2. From here, you can select from a variety of tags to narrow your search. A simple search might include the Acoustic and Latin genres with a Medium tempo.
  3. You can refine your search further by clicking the small arrow on a tag. This will display any available sub-genres.
  4. Try different combinations of genres, moods, movements, places and tempos for a more advanced search.
  5. Each track list has the following options:
    • Click to listen to the track
    • Adjust the sorting order
    • Find similar songs
    • Add to a playlist
    • License (ignore this option)
    • Download track

Downloading Music Files:

When you’ve found a song you like, click ‘Download‘. An MP3 file should appear at the bottom left of your browser. Alternately, from the Desktop on a Mac you can click ‘Go > Downloads‘ to locate your songs.

Using Playlists and .WAV Files:

  • You can create Projects and associated Playlists from the menu on the left side of the page.
  • While browsing music, add songs to a playlist so they can be easily accessed and downloaded at a later time.
  • To change from the default .mp3 file format for all downloaded songs, click on your ‘Account‘ at the top right of the page.
    • Click ‘Account Settings‘.
    • Select the ‘Settings‘ tab and check ‘Download tracks in .wav format‘.
    • Click ‘Save Changes to Profile‘ and reload the page.

Virtual Storage

Any faculty or staff member has access to the SOJC’s virtual storage server. This server can be access from any of the lab computers and also accessed from a personal device like a laptop or desktop computer.

To access the server from a personal laptop or desktop computer, you will need to first download Cisco AnyConnect Secure Client. Once installed please refer to this Service Portal article on the process to connect to the VPN. Put \\sojc-files.uoregon.edu into the file search bar, it will ask for your DuckID and password, then you should be able to access the folders.
