SOJC Faculty and Staff Communications Toolkit

The SOJC Communication Team’s works to increase awareness about the SOJC and elevate its reputation so we can establish our faculty and staff as thought leaders while recruiting the best and brightest students, faculty, and staff. The best way to do this is to share stories that demonstrate success, innovation, and creativity in your work and our students’ work.

In this Faculty/Staff Communication Toolkit, you’ll find:

  • Ways to share your ideas and help us tell the SOJC story better
  • Best practices and tools to help you spread the word about your classes, events, and programs
  • Guidelines for brand and messaging compliance
  • Criteria for Comms Team support
  • Instructions for ordering swag

If you have any questions about how to use these materials, please reach out to Andra Brichacek Roe with general questions and questions about events, Diana Fingal about stories and media relations, Chad Shelton about social media, Allison VanSciver for brand and design, and Jeremy Parker about video and photos.

Help Us Tell the SOJC Story

We put our ears to the ground to find stories through our interactions with faculty and students, but we don’t catch everything. That’s why your proactive communication about your projects, research, student work, and news is so important.

To find out how you can help us spread the word about the SOJC and your work to the world, start by reading “10 Ways Faculty and Staff Can Help Comms.” Then fill out the forms below to get your info to the Comms Team:

Comms and Marketing Support

Got a project or event you’d like the SOJC Comms Team to help with? We may be able to help, but our small team’s purview focuses primarily on communicating to external audiences. Check out our criteria linked below to find out if we can support your project and next steps in the process.

UO Visual Brand Guidelines

The UO’s Central Communication Team oversees development and enforcement of the UO Brand Guidelines, and the SOJC Communication Team is tasked with making sure all SOJC materials are aligned with those guidelines. All communication materials developed, especially for external audiences, must follow these guidelines so we have a consistent visual identity that makes it clear we’re all part of the UO. Visit the UO’s visual brand guidelines website to learn the expectations when developing communication pieces of your own. COMING SOON: SOJC-specific brand guidelines!

SOJC Brand Messaging

One of the goals in the 2021–24 SOJC Strategic Plan is to refresh the school’s brand and strengthen the school’s community, culture, and reputation by clarifying internally and externally who we are, what we do, and the impact of our research, professional, and creative work. With the guidance of professional market research, the SOJC Communication Team created messaging frameworks for the SOJC and its academic programs and research centers. If you’re communicating about the school, please consult the frameworks to understand the key messages our community has established.

Social Media Guidelines

Social media is an important communication tool for the SOJC, and each channel has its own audience and content types. You can help us tell the SOJC story by sharing your and your students’ work and stories on social media. Tag us @uosojc and we will amplify your message to our tens of thousands of followers!

But first, please review the Faculty and Staff Social Media Toolkit for a thorough explanation of each channel, including audiences, the content that works best on each channel, tips for supporting our SOJC social media accounts, and answers to all your questions about sharing SOJC content.

Faculty and Staff Directory Profile Pages

Every SOJC faculty and staff member and graduate employee has their own page on the Faculty and Staff Directory on our website. Keeping these pages up to date with your title, contact info, bio, research, media mentions, and awards is important. Prospective students consult them often when deciding whether to apply to our programs, and they are among the most popular pages on our website. You can update your content yourself through the university’s CASIT profile system. Review the instructions linked below to keep your profile up to date.

Promote Your Events

SOJC faculty and staff regularly host events for internal and external audiences, and we know there’s a need for materials to promote them. While the Comms Team does not have the capacity to create materials for events beyond the SOJC signature events, we can amplify your efforts to promote your own events. Check out our tip sheet linked below for guidance.

Order SOJC and UO Swag

Need some SOJC-branded swag as a giveaway, welcome gift, or promotion for your programs or events? We can help! We will provide you with brand-compliant logos and other artwork and can order for you or connect you with university-approved swag vendors.

Become a UO Expert

UO Communications provides and maintains a directory of faculty experts from across campus who are willing to answer questions from direct media inquiries. If you would like to be added to it, review the experts directory to learn what kind of information is shared with media. Then complete the form below to let the SOJC Comm Team know you’re interested. Someone on our team will reach out to confirm your bio details and then submit it to UO Comms to add to the UO Experts directory.
